Alone In The Database

I just discovered two enhancements to Tracing in ASP.NET 2.0. This is great news to me!

See this fragment:

<trace
enabled="true|false"
localOnly="true|false"
mostRecent="true|false"
pageOutput="true|false"
requestLimit="integer"
traceMode="SortByTime|SortByCategory"
writeToDiagnosticsTrace="true|false"
/>

Notice the two highlighted entries:

mostRecent - OMG! In 1.x when your tracing output hit the limit (requestLimit) it just stopped saving your data. Oops! You had to be sure to monitor it and clear it out as needed. What a joke! Not anymore :) With this new feature it works like it should have always worked - as a rolling list. So when it's "full" and more entries come in, they overwrite the oldest, etc.

writeToDiagnosticsTrace - OMG! In 1.x the Page.Trace was totally separate from any "real" tracing you might want - meaning if you set up "Trace Listeners" they couldn't "hear" this tracing information. The ASP.NET Page Tracing was totally isolated from this awesome part of .NET. Not anymore! With this feature, it works as before, but you ALSO get the trace data available to any configured listeners. Awesome.

Both of these features should have been there from the beginning. Thank goodness they finally are.
